Cabinet-Based or Freestanding Kitchen IslandsIslands have largely supplanted peninsulas, and work tables even to a small degree the kitchen table in todays modern kitchen. "kitchen island design" is almost always a topic in every kitchen design or remodeling project were engaged. The neat thing is we now do islands in two different ways freestanding or cabinet based. Cabinet based is old school and work fine, freestanding is new and dramatic way to put together an island design. Cabinet Based Kitchen IslandsMost kitchen island designs are comprised of peninsula base cabinets or back to back base cabinets for larger islands. Either way an island is a work horse. The larger the custom kitchen island the more you can put in it sinks, appliances and therefore the more a work center it is. A good kitchen island design should be a minimum of 36" on at least two sides and the ideal would be 48" on one side, 42" on at least a second side and the balance can be 36". The island will add storage capacity, counter top space and can take any number of shapes and forms. In addition most islands will accommodate some form of seating. |
Freestanding Kitchen IslandsCabinet manufacturers like Dura Supreme cabinetry and Medallion cabinetry were quick on the uptake with kitchen island trend and soon created the components necessary for our designers to create some beautiful freestanding kitchen island plans. These Islands are much more like freestanding furniture. There is no doubt that a freestanding custom island by Jay Rambo, our Texas version of Clive Christian, is an actual piece of furniture. This furniture element adds high style and drama to the kitchen. |
