I don't know where to start the process; I need some kitchen design ideas to get started.

I want to start with this kitchen design not because it is outstanding but to illustrate for you a simple point. There is no need or requirement for all kitchen cabinetry to be the same color or finish, same holds true with counter tops & even fixture finishes. Here we have three distinct stations primarily distinguished by color, cooking, clean up & island. Three colors two counter tops & even the finish of the faucet varies from the range. Do you see how this works?

This is a very interesting kitchen. It proves that you can get very creative without varying color, cabinets or style. There are four stations, the kitchen island, the cooking area, preparation and the twin towers. I always appreciate the use of mass. The mass of the refrigerator & the double ovens are balanced at each end. You have seen enough Roman and Greek architecture to know proportion when you see it. Do you see it here? Then we get very creative in the middle. There are two distinct work areas here cooking and preparation. Cooking is uniquely compressed, the two small cabinets remind me of architectural picture windows. To the right is a preparation area, with another cabinet height delineating it. Even the kitchen island design here is interesting, it is clearly about clean up, but... it has two modes clean up and entertaining.

There is too much going on in this kitchen it takes a good idea and makes me a bit dizzy. Let's look at the good points. It uses walls and thin columns to make a large fireplace hearth. There is a clear preparation clean up area in the island and a distinct cold storage area. The hearth has so many elements in it; two finishes, two columns two imbedded and largely dysfunctional cabinets and way too much in the nick knack department. The hearth would be much improved without the nick knack alcove & hutch. My favorite part of this kitchen design idea is the built in refrigerator with the seeded glass front utility cabinet to its right.
