Quartz Countertops - Silestone, Caesarstone, and Cambria Countertops

Quartz countertops or man made natural stone, is manufactured by suspending a mineral compound ie quartz in a polyester or acrylic resin. The manufacturing process creates a beautiful, durable, non pourous, low maintenance, surface which is highly resistant to bacteria, water, heat and staining. Although the degree of these attributes varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. Like granite countertops, quartz countertops take the same edge profiles, allow for an integrated sink and or backsplash and come in slabs in hundreds of unique and exciting colors. Keep in mind, anything that comes mined or manufactured in slabs is going to have a seam somewhere, although with quartz countertops it can be harder to find the seem. Silestone

Silestone is manufactured by a company called Cosentino, which began operations 70 years ago in Almeria, Spain. The Cosentino family was in the stone industry that is they were making countertops and other residential and commercial products out of granite and marble. Today 70 years later, Silestone controls more than 50% of the U.S. quartz countertop market. Sort of like the Google of quartz countertops.

Silestone offers the unique combination of built-in Microban® antimicrobial product protection, National Sanitation Foundation certification and GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality Certification. Microban protection inhibits the growth of microbes such as odor-causing bacteria, mold and mildew. While Microban protection does not protect users from foodborne illness and is not a substitute for normal cleaning practices, it does result in countertops that are easier to clean and stay clean.

Certifications by the National Sanitation Foundation and the GREENGUARD Environmental Institute mean Silestone Quartz countertops are a Safer Surface for areas where food preparation takes place, while protecting the quality of your indoor air quality because it has low-to-no emission (off gassing) of toxic chemicals into the indoor environment. Silestone is GREENGUARD certified for low emitting interior building materials, furnishings, and finish systems used in educational (daycare and K-12) environments. All GREENGUARD Children & SchoolsSM products have been tested for their chemical emissions performance.

CaesarStone Quartz Surfaces

The original quartz countertop surface. Founded in 1987, CaesarStone is named after the ancient Roman city of Caesarea in a Kibbutz called Sdot-Yam in Israel. Think of the cocktail party value you can get out of that tidbit. What they discovered way back in 1987 was that the right mixture of ground quartz aggregates, pigments and polymers produced an unparalleled surface.

CaesarStone quartz countertops are actually 93% quartz, one of natures hardest minerals. There are 4 color groups, read that 4 price levels in CaesarStone. There are 38 standard colors, 5 available in a honed finish and 1 in a textured finish. IceStone durable surfaces contain recycled content that ranges from 70% on average to 75% of the product by weight. Of the recycled content, generally 80-100% is pre-consumer waste, with the balance being post-consumer waste.

MR 5: Regional Materials

IceStone durable surfaces are manufactured in Brooklyn, NY. If your project is within 500 miles of us, IceStone qualifies as a regional material.

EQ 4: Low-Emitting Materials

IceStone durable surfaces contain no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and thus emit no VOCs. We recommend that IceStone be used in conjunction with certain low-VOC or no-VOC sealants.
